在愛丁堡藝術節的時候
我看了一個台灣KW君的站立戲劇
在他的喜劇裡面
他講了好多兩岸黑暗梗
並且他提到 
他很盡力地要去融入英國文化
所以學了很多文化深層內容
我也不知道他講的那些英國名人是誰
也用很幽默的方式去講述自己在考英國公民考試的時候的經歷
還問了本地人都不知道的冷知識
他真的很用力在當英國人 他自己說道

至於另一個台灣人
是跟我買腳踏車的台灣女生
她在愛丁堡當數據分析師
我問她在當地工作的挑戰是什麼
她說是文化差異
因為英國人 or 蘇格蘭人
很習慣移民文化
他們從小生長在一個
大家都來自不同地方的國家
司空見慣地會對其他國家文化不感興趣
不像在台灣 外國人會有一圈光環
大家都會盯著他們看並且感到好奇
她在蘇格蘭這間公司會覺得比較難融入

其實看了這兩位之後
自己也有點感觸

讓我覺得

難道不能台灣跟英國人格兼容並蓄嗎？

或許你會說 你就是在別人國家

不應該這樣想

這也是蠻有趣的一個小論點

相對來說

台灣女生這邊則是

希望能夠達成文化共融的目標

畢竟英國就是個文化大熔爐

充滿世界各地的人

同事之間互相交流

英文變成一個媒介跟工具

可以用來了解彼此之間的文化背景

這聽起來似乎較像是一個烏托邦

用台灣的背景來講

其實我們也比較少去了解我們的新住民文化

我一直有一個文化觸角

喜歡去知道人家那邊是怎麼樣

台灣是一個蠻包容的地方

希望不同文化的大家也可以互相交流

彼此深化對彼此的了解

During the Edinburgh Festival, I had the pleasure of attending a stand-up comedy performance by a talented Taiwanese comedian, known as KW. His comedy routine delved into the complexities surrounding the Taiwan Strait, shedding light on the shadows that exist between the two sides. Additionally, he shared his earnest efforts to immerse himself in British culture, allowing him to gain profound insights into this foreign world. Throughout his performance, he humorously recounted anecdotes from his journey to get British citizenship, even engaging the locals in discussions about obscure trivia. It was evident that he was truly committed to becoming British, as he openly proclaimed.

On a separate note, I encountered another Taiwanese individual, a young woman from whom I sold my bicycle to. She worked as a data analyst in Edinburgh, and I was intrigued to learn about her challenges in the city. She candidly mentioned that one of her primary obstacles was the stark cultural contrast between Taiwan and the UK. She highlighted the fact that the British and the Scots are accustomed to a rich immigrant culture, having grown up in a land of diverse origins. Paradoxically, this familiarity with diversity sometimes results in an indifference to other cultures. In stark contrast to Taiwan, where foreigners often attract significant attention and curiosity, she found it more challenging to blend in within the Scottish corporate environment.

As I reflected on these two unique perspectives, particularly KW's comedic endeavors to embrace British culture, I found myself pondering the notion of compatibility between Taiwan and Britain. KW's relentless pursuit of Britishness prompted me to question whether such an assimilation could ever truly occur when one is in a foreign land.

It was indeed a compelling line of thought, with the underlying message being that when living in someone else's country, one should avoid viewing oneself as an outsider. The idea that differences need not be divisive but rather serve as a source of fascination and enrichment is an intriguing perspective.

In the grander scheme of things, Taiwanese individuals, like the data analyst, seem to seek cultural integration. The UK, known for its status as a melting pot of cultures, is teeming with people from diverse corners of the world. Here, colleagues communicate using English as a medium and a tool for understanding each other's cultural backgrounds, creating what could almost be described as a utopian environment.

Back in Taiwan, it becomes evident that we may not know as much about our new cultural counterparts as we would like. However, there is a strong cultural curiosity ingrained within us. We have always nurtured a profound interest in understanding life of people's cultural backgrounds. Taiwan has long been a beacon of tolerance, promoting communication and deepening the understanding between individuals from various cultural backgrounds, fostering a rich tapestry of diversity and acceptance.
